Advice on Baby Photography
Baby photography or photographing infants and newborns holds its unique set of challenges. Babies tend to be unpredictable in their behavior and giving posing instructions to a baby is not only useless but can earn you the ire of protective parents.
While baby photography holds a lot of unexpected moments, babies and infants most often create great and memorable photos, which make them a favorite subject for photographers. The key is learning how to work with and around the difficulties and challenges of working with babies. Here are some tips to help you take great baby photographs.
Location
Whether the shoot will be done in the studio, outdoors, or at home, the comfort of the baby should be paramount. A comfortable baby is a happy baby and a happy baby makes a cooperative baby which in turn makes great baby photos. Knowing the location before the shoot will also give you an idea about lighting conditions in the place and will allow you to prepare accordingly.
Props and wardrobe
Discuss with the parents beforehand what they would want their infant to wear to the shoot. Some parents do not feel comfortable about taking pictures of their infant without clothes. Simple props such as a big hat, a toy, or sunglasses can make for funny and memorable pictures.
Equipment
Given the unpredictability of infants, you should have the right equipment which can take photos fast with the least distortion. If your equipment is not up to par, you may just come out with a bunch of blurry images because of your subject’s tendency to move at an inopportune moment or just as you are about to shoot a picture. A fast camera with a wide aperture and fast ISO speed is a must.
Patience
When dealing with infants one should be flexible and allow for time to deal with the necessities of your little subject. When you feel or see that the infant is feeling uncomfortable or getting tense, allow the parents to hug, reassure or attend to his or her needs before starting again. When scheduling your shoots, allow adequate time to accommodate these eventualities.
