Although it can be done in person, social networking is much more popular online. It is mainly because millions of people flock the Web because it provides easier chances to stay connected with your friends, family, loved ones, and acquaintances as well as to meet, get to know, develop friendship, and build connections with different kinds of people from different places. These are made possible by social sites, the most popular of which include MySpace and Facebook.

Social sites generally provide their social networking services for free, which is another reason why millions of Internet users patronize them. They work like a community of Internet users who, more often than not, are joined together by common interests. What these Internet users initially do is register with at least one social site. Having successfully registered, they can set up their profile pages which include details such as their name, age, skills and interests, among others. They may also customize the presentation of their profile page according to what kind of personality they have.

The members can then enjoy the activities provided by their social sites such as creating their own network of contacts. They can search for and invite people that either match their interests or it could be their long time friends, former classmates, etc. They can send out messages to other users as well as post comments, and this can be the start of establishing connections or developing relationships.

While a few of the most popular are social sites that focus on a general audience, there are ones which focus on a specific target audience. The members of the Flickr community, for instance, are brought together by a common interest in managing and sharing their photos. Another example is Shelfari, who has book-lovers as its target audience. These people get to create their network of friends and discuss with them their opinions about the books that they have read.

Furthermore, users may use the connections that they have established to promote their businesses, products, or services if they have any. They can tell their network of contacts about them because who knows, some people might be in need of those products or services.

With the things that social networking makes possible, it is not surprising if it has become a part of the Web surfers' Internet routine. It may pose certain dangers such as identity theft and fraud, which are also present outside the Internet world. But, if precautions are taken and informed choices are made, then users will definitely have fun and make full use of the benefits that this activity on the Web has to offer.
